Berry group is working with SABIC, a leading global chemical company, to promote technological innovation and application of polyolefin resin manufacturing with recycled chemicals. They have established a long-term partnership focusing on the common values of sustainable development and circular economy.
Earlier this year, berry released the strategic impact on sustainable development 2025, promising to replace the packaging of all products with reusable, recyclable or compostable packaging by 2025. As part of its commitment and in support of the circular economy, Berry has been promoting new and innovative ways to create more environmentally sustainable packaging. The company's efforts include cooperation with reliable suppliers to promote the development of the whole packaging industry.
SABIC announced at the end of 2018 that it plans to build a semi-commercial plant in the Netherlands to extract and upgrade valuable raw materials from low-quality mixed recycled waste plastics.
In 2019, SABIC has used its existing production facilities to produce the first batch of recycled raw materials and passed the certification. Berry has used these recycled materials to make recyclable, CO extruded vertical bags containing 30% PCR. Berry has promised to continue to use the materials, which could be used in polypropylene or polyethylene for its European consumer packaging.
Tom salmon, chairman and CEO of berry, said that as a leader in sustainable packaging, we attach great importance to innovative methods around recycling valuable plastics. SABIC's schedule to start semi-commercial production is one of the fastest we have seen in the industry, and we hope to join them in supporting circular economy initiatives.
The benefits of chemical recycling include the ability to recycle mixed waste plastics, otherwise they will be transported to landfills or incinerated. Unlike mechanical recycling, the chemical recycling process can remove all pollutants, including ink and colorant, so that the quality of recycled plastics is the same as that of raw materials, and can be directly contacted with food.
Bob maughon, SABIC's executive vice president for sustainability, technology and innovation, said SABIC was proud to be the first petrochemical company to implement a chemical recovery project aimed at converting challenging waste plastics into steam cracking feedstocks. This project proves that we can extend the advanced chemical recovery process to the initial polymer. This project is only part of the initiative of trucircle, a new initiative launched by SABIC, which covers recycled materials and technologies and aims to enable our consumers and product manufacturers to provide greater sustainability.
