The most common modified and unmodified inorganic rheology modifiers include attapulgite clay, bentonite, organoclay, and treated and untreated synthetic silica. Most inorganic thickeners and rheology modifiers are provided in powder form. If they are properly dispersed in coatings, they can usually function as suspending or gelling agents, and in some cases have secondary uses such as pigment extenders. Inorganic rheology modifiers often have a high plastic value and have thixotropic properties. Sometimes they are added to water-based formulations as a secondary thickener to improve the anti-sag, anti-settling, Syneresis and splash resistance.
