PDMS has a high free volume, which results in a special atomic spacing of the silicone resin, so the polymer has a strong ability to penetrate gas and liquid. Quite unique medical applications resulting from these features include:
Incompatible materials, such as pharmaceuticals, can be incorporated into repair materials for silicone-based pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSA). The drug is placed in a free space inside the silicone matrix. The rate is controlled by the silica matrix (such as filler grade, type, additional additives, and crosslink density), and the drug is released at the designed rate. The drug slowly leaks out of the silicone matrix and is absorbed by the skin. Drug delivery systems are a relatively new area and can be applied to any range, from vitamins and nitroglycerin-like drugs to antibiotics.
Gas permeability of unfilled silicone rubber is 10 times higher than natural rubber4. Based on the high permeability of oxygen, the oxygen concentrator operates through a silicone membrane. They can increase the amount of oxygen in the atmosphere around us from 20.9% to 40% and continuously supply it to patients. This oxygen cylinder is very effective and is widely used in patients with damaged respiratory systems.
