Cellulose thickeners have high thickening efficiency, especially for thickening the aqueous phase; there are fewer restrictions on coating formulations, and they are widely used; a wide range of pH can be used. However, it has the disadvantages of poor leveling, more splashing during roll coating, poor stability, and susceptibility to microbial degradation. Because of its low viscosity under high shear and high viscosity under static and low shear, the viscosity increases rapidly after coating is completed, which can prevent sagging, but on the other hand causes poor leveling. Studies have shown that the relative molecular weight of thickeners increases, and the splashability of latex coatings also increases. Cellulose thickeners are prone to splashing due to their large molecular weight. And because cellulose is better hydrophilic, it will reduce the water resistance of the paint film.
