The Application of Silicone in Contact Lenses

Hits: 709 img

The development of contact lenses has undergone a significant evolution, from rigid materials to soft hydrogel lenses. In recent years, the introduction of silicone has brought an important breakthrough to this field. Traditional hydrogel lenses rely on water content to transmit oxygen. While they provide comfort, their oxygen permeability is limited. Prolonged wear often leads to corneal hypoxia, causing redness or discomfort. Silicone materials, with their unique molecular structure, offer a remarkable solution.

Silicone contains –Si–O– bonds in its polymer backbone, which provide excellent flexibility and high oxygen permeability. By incorporating silicone into hydrogel systems, silicone hydrogel lenses were developed. These lenses allow much more oxygen to pass through to the cornea, ensuring that the eyes receive sufficient oxygen. As a result, they significantly improve eye health, reduce risks associated with oxygen deficiency, and allow users to wear lenses for longer periods.
