Carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic composite is a kind of composite material (CFRTP) with thermoplastic resin as matrix and carbon fiber as reinforcement. There are differences between thermoplastic resin based carbon fiber composite and traditional thermosetting resin based carbon fiber composite in resin matrix, reaction type, material properties and so on.
In the process of processing, thermoplastic resin based carbon fiber composite belongs to crystallization and glass transition, while thermosetting resin based carbon fiber composite occurs crosslinking and curing reaction. In terms of process difficulty, thermoplastic carbon fiber composite is more difficult to infiltrate than thermosetting carbon fiber composite in the preparation process, but at the same time, it has obvious advantages: shorter molding cycle, better impact resistance, weldability, realization of secondary molding, high freedom of structural design, etc. All kinds of parts made of carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic composites have many advantages, such as low density, high strength, high toughness ratio, recyclable and reusable. They have a wide application prospect in aerospace, military industry, high-end machinery, medical and other fields.
The common resin matrix of carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic composites are: PEEKK, TPI, PPS, PEEKK, etc. In the following, three kinds of carbon fiber-reinforced thermoplastic composites, carbon fiber-reinforced polyimide, carbon fiber-reinforced polyphenylene sulfide and carbon fiber-reinforced polyetheretherketone, are briefly introduced.
Carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic polyimide composite:
As a new generation of high-performance special engineering plastics, thermoplastic polyimides not only retain the high strength, high temperature resistance, chemical corrosion resistance, good dielectric property, radiation resistance and other characteristics of traditional thermosetting polyimides, but also have outstanding advantages in toughness and hot processing molding. In addition to hot molding, extrusion or injection molding can also be used. When the volume fraction of carbon fiber reaches 30%, the tensile and bending strength of the material is about 2-3 times that of the pure resin. The carbon fiber reinforced method also gives thermoplastic polyimide more excellent heat resistance and mechanical properties, making it a higher level of wear-resistant and corrosion-resistant high-performance material.
Carbon fiber reinforced polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) composite:
Polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) is also one of the most popular thermoplastic resins in the composite industry. It has excellent mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, self flame retardancy and other aspects, so it is often used as the matrix material of various high-performance composite materials. The mechanical properties of carbon fiber reinforced polyphenylene sulfide composite are also affected by the content of carbon fiber. Under a certain threshold, the larger the content of carbon fiber, the stronger the ability to bear the external load. The results show that the ILSS of the Continuous Carbon Fiber Reinforced PPS Composite can still show good stability under the temperature difference of up to 100 β.
Carbon Fiber Reinforced PEEK composite:
Peek has the advantages of high rigidity, good dimensional stability, small linear expansion coefficient, great stress tolerance, no obvious extension due to the extension of time, small density and good processing performance, and it is suitable for components with high precision requirements. Peek itself is a kind of thermoplastic resin with good heat resistance, and its long-term working temperature can even reach 250 β. In such a high temperature environment, its mechanical properties are basically not affected. Using carbon fiber as reinforcement can further improve the performance of peek in strength, rigidity, wear resistance and other aspects, and also significantly prolong the overall service life of products. Relevant experiments show that when the proportion of carbon fiber materials is 25% - 30%, the wear resistance of the composite based on peek is significantly improved, and the addition of carbon fiber materials can effectively improve its application value and scope.
Domestic carbon fiber-reinforced thermoplastic composite industry started late. Taking prepreg as an example, the market is still dominated by glass fiber-reinforced PP, PA and other general plastic prepreg, and the mass production of carbon fiber-reinforced thermoplastic prepreg has not yet been realized. Based on the application of thermosetting carbon fiber composite materials, Wuxi Zhishang New Material Technology Co., Ltd. has independently developed a carbon fiber thermoplastic composite production line integrating the preparation, molding and coating of prepreg. The production line will gradually achieve the goal of mass production of thermoplastic carbon fiber composite parts with high performance, low cost and environmental protection. At present, it has carried out relevant industrialization cooperation activities with some high-end medical device brands, aerospace and rail transit parts manufacturers.
