The United Nations on June 1 approved Turkey's request to change the country's name in all official documents, said Stefana Djarric, spokesman for the UN Secretary-General.

The United Nations on Wednesday granted Turkey's request to change its name from Turkey to Türkiye, Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, told reporters.

"The Republic of Turkey (Turkey) has been renamed the Republic of Türkiye," Djaric said, adding that the change took effect immediately after the Turkish authorities made a request to the United Nations.

The change came into force immediately at the time when the world body received a letter from Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu to the UN chief with a request to change the country's name, the spokesman said.
On May 31, local time, Turkish Foreign Minister Cavusoglu posted on his social media platform that he sent a letter to the Secretary-General of the United Nations on the same day, requesting that Turkey's foreign language name be changed to "Türkiye".

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said the decision to change the country's name was one of the measures Turkey was taking to "enhance the country's prestige on the international stage."

Cavusoglu reportedly said that the change in the spelling was adopted as part of the steps aimed at increasing the country's prestige in the international arena.

In December 2021, Turkey will start using "Türkiye" as its foreign language country name in both domestic and international settings.

In Turkish, the name of Turkey is "Türkiye". In English, the Turkish name is "Turkey". And the word "turkey" means "turkey" in English and is even defined in the Cambridge Dictionary as "something that fails badly" or "stupid person".
