LSR can be clear and transparent and can be manufactured with unique properties such as solvent resistance, high thermal stability or low gas release. LSR also blends well with a variety of additives, special fillers (pigments) and active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) with minimal impact on critical properties such as toughness and elasticity of the final vulcanized elastomer.
Especially in the medical field, the biocompatibility of silicone is very important and has been used in the implantation of medical equipment. Silicone resins are also widely used in harsh environments. This is due to its inherent excellent thermal stability in high and low temperature environments and its low modulus to provide stress relief in alternating hot and cold environments.
In general, LSR is composed of two-part silicone resins with viscosity ranging from 50,000 to more than 1000000cPs in a 1:1 ratio. In most cases, LSR is produced using platinum-catalyzed additive vulcanization systems at temperatures greater than 80 ° c. LSR is typically composed of a blend of approximately 75% linear silicone polymers, approximately 23% gaseous silica, and a partial residue of sulfide additives such as hydrogenated crosslinking agents and polymer-blocking agents. Gaseous silica enhances the physical properties of silicone resins. It has the ability to act on non-covalent bonds of polymers, helping to achieve stress release when shear forces are applied to unvulcanized or vulcanized polymers.
