Enhancement of SiO2 in Epoxy Coatings -- Protection Mechanism

Hits: 228 img

Since epoxy resins are liquid polymers, they need the help of curing agents, additives and fillers to become corrosion-resistant epoxy coatings. Among them, nano-oxides are often added to epoxy resin coatings as fillers, typically representing silica, titanium dioxide, alumina, zinc oxide and rare earth oxides, etc. These nano-oxides show many unique physical and chemical properties by virtue of their special size and structure, which can significantly enhance the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of the coating.
There are two main mechanisms for nano-oxide particles to enhance the protective properties of epoxy coatings:
First, by means of its small size, it can effectively fill the micro cracks and holes caused by local shrinkage in the curing process of epoxy resin, reduce the diffusion path of corrosive media, and thus enhance the shielding and protection performance of the coating.

The second is to improve the hardness of epoxy resin and enhance the mechanical properties of the coating by using the characteristics of high hardness of oxide particles themselves.
In addition, adding appropriate amount of nano-oxide particles can also improve the interfacial bonding strength of epoxy coating and prolong the service life of the coating.
